If your teen is about to purchase their first car, you must be losing your mind! My daughter purchased hers a couple of years ago and my son will begin the same process in the next year. It’s a super exciting time for teenagers but an extremely stressful time for parents of teens.
Cost of a car
Figuring out the cost of a vehicle can be difficult. Some parents are amazing and purchase the vehicle for their child, some go 50/50 on the price of a vehicle, and others (like me) make their child pay for the vehicle.
Whatever you choose is completely fine, just choose what is best for your family.
Insurance
Now it’s time to come up with a plan for payment of insurance, plates, etc. For our family, our daughter paid the bulk of her insurance. We covered a small percentage as we insisted she have the additions for her insurance. As she had paid for her car we offered to pay for her plates and the tax, not the car.
Items They Should Have In Their Vehicle
After she purchased her vehicle I put together a basket of items for her car as a gift. Below are the items I included:

First Aid Kit:
A compact first aid kit that they can keep in the vehicle could be very useful to them. My daughter and her friends loved going exploring and this helped them a few times with minor cuts and bruises.

Emergency Car Kit:
Thankfully my daughter hasn’t needed to use her emergency car kit. I sleep better at night knowing she has it.

Phone Charger:
I bought her a phone charger in case of emergencies. I would never want her stranded with a phone that isn’t charged. She obviously uses it for non-emergency reasons, but it’s another thing that gives me a piece of mind.
