Are you thinking of putting together a DIY first aid kit? Due to working in construction and having 2 teenagers, my at-home first aid kit rivals most hospitals…. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get where I’m going with this… it’s ridiculous, and I can help you!
As a planner/control freak, even I can’t predict what injury one of my family members will bring my way, so I have secured a ton of items over the years in an attempt to keep some control.

Basic Home Made First Aid Kit
So…. What should every at-home DIY first aid kit have? I keep a basket under my main bathroom’s sink that has the basics

- Tough Strips Band-aids’ in multiple sizes (we prefer the “tough strip” type as they stay on better.
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Polysporn
- After Bite
- Thermometer
- Benadryl
- Advil
- Tylenol
- Small Scissors
- Gloves
- A chamber for inhalers (we have a few asthmatics in the house. They each have their own, but I keep one in here incase of emergencies or they lost it).
Additional DIY First Aid Kits
And what does my extra self have in addition to this?
I keep two bins in my linen closet. One is for lacerations and the other is for misc.

Laceration Kit
- Steril Pads in Large (3×4”), Medium (3×3”, and small (2×2”)
- Rolled Gauze in Large (4”), Medium (3”), and small (2”)
- Steri Strips
- Waterproof first aid tape
- Tough Strips bandaids for finger care
- Variety pack of bandaids
- Latex finger cots. (I cut the tip of my finger off so these were added to my first aid kit).
Misc Kits

- Covid rapid tests (I received a ton from the school)
- Heat wraps
- Eye patch. (My son had an eye injury so this was added to my first aid kit)
- Eye protector
- Sling (like this, but mine was provided by the hospital when I broke my elbow)
- Elastic Banadage aka tensor bandages
- Heating Pads
- Wrist brace
- Knee Brace
- Items for cold’s and flu’s (Click here to read about those recommendations)
***I also keep a basic first aid kit in my car that I purchased off of Amazon, and I have a mini version of my home’s first aid kit that’s kept on job sites. ***
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, nurse, or medical professional of any type. These are my very simple thoughts and ideas that I have formed over 19 years of being a mom and over 20 years working in first aid.
If you have any suggestions on what else I can add to my DIY first aid kit, I would love to hear about it in the comments section!
